Managing Water Needs During Motorcycle Adventure Travel

Written by Eric Lange | December 22, 2010

Looking for a way to manage your water needs during a motorcycle adventure?  Consider this plan and combination of travel gear to make clean water easy, low-cost, and always available to you.

Step 1) Fill an MSR Dromodory or Ortleib Water Bag with ordinary tap water from anywhere

Step 2) Drop the Miracle Egg into the bag

That’s it!

Manufacturers like MSR and Ortleib make very high-quality water bags that can be filled with water and stored in a luggage box, strapped to the back of your motorcycle seat, or just stuffed into whatever luggage situation you’ve chosen.  These water bags are extremely durable and should never have problems leaking as long as they are not damaged.

But what about the purification?  We’ve found the lightest, easiest, and most affordable way to tackle the purification is with a product called the “Miracle Egg” made by AquaSmarter.  Just drop this plastic egg into your water bag, and it purifies by ionization at about the rate of 1.5 liters per hour.   Read more about the chemical-free process on AquaSmarter’s website at your leisure, but the end result is that you’re getting purified water.  We used this system without getting sick from Ushuaia, Argentina to Cartagena, Colombia over the course of 4 months of riding!

Aside from giving yourself a reliable source of clean water, think about these benefits:

-By using tap water you’ll save money by not having to buy bottled water

-How many fewer plastic bottles would be manufactured and disposed of every year if we all stopped drinking from disposable bottles?

-How much energy goes into the factories that make bottles of water?

-How much oil, fuel, truck tires, truck parts, and wasted energy goes into shipping those bottles?

-If we depended on bottled water less, would that mean fewer trucks on the road, less traffic, and safer riding conditions for motorcycle travelers?

Hmmm……seems like a no-brainer to us…..
