For one of the fastest motorcycle adventures ever: KTMs RC8

Written by Eric Lange | February 16, 2012

Quite a bit after the fact, it’s time to make a few comments about our test ride on KTM’s RC8.  (A designation that in German, must hint toward “rocket power.”)  Just because this is being written after the fact, don’t think that’s for lack of motivation.  The RC8 was incredibly motivating.

At the KTM Rally in Mill Hall, PA, riders were given the chance to test-ride any of the latest models they had brought along in the KTM truck.  In addition to obviously trying the current 990 Adventure R, the RC8 was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up (this from a rider who normally is on a more worldly adventure bike.)

This machine…this in-hand stick of dynamite just begging to be lit up, made for an unforgettable introduction to sport bikes.  Larger than the average sportbike rider, 6’3” and 235lbs actually felt quite comfortable on this bike, and there was no shortage of horsepower, either.

As we’re not a sport-bike touring company (yet) there are no really technical comments, data, or figures to list here.  Just a few helmet cam shots showing what it felt like to accelerate from bottom revs.  In the video shown, a couple of those were 2nd gear, 3500 rpms, at about 30mph, and then just wrenching on it.  The front end would lift up just ever so gracefully, and very rapidly cross the 100mph mark.

Very rapidly.

Again, no specifics…just inspirations.  The KTM RC8 is one fun bike.  Enjoy the video.
