This is Mongolia the way it’s meant to be ridden—big skies, real dirt, and remote country where the tracks fade, the horizon doesn’t, and ADV bikes feel purpose-built for every mile.

This route cuts straight through the heart of Genghis Khan’s former kingdom, where the steppe still feels as wild and untamed as it did when the Mongol Empire rode out from here and changed the world. We kick things off with the Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar, then point the bikes toward the open country and disappear into the backcountry for eight solid riding days.

This isn’t a figure-it-out-yourself trip. Meals and accommodations are covered, there’s a support truck carrying gear and backing you up, and a mechanic on the team to handle flats and trail-side issues so small problems don’t turn into big ones.

You’ll ride with experienced, knowledgeable guides who understand both the terrain and the culture—helping you through technical sections, translating local interactions, and adding real context at monasteries, nomadic camps, and key cultural stops along the way.

It’s challenging in the right ways, fully supported where it matters, and unapologetically Mongolian from start to finish.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar

happy with a beer in Mongolia

Your Mongolian adventure kicks off in Ulaanbaatar, where our team will meet you at the airport and get you settled at the hotel. Today is purposely relaxed. Time to ditch the jet lag, unpack, and get your first feel for Mongolia.

Depending on when you land, the guide will have a few options or suggestions for you to get to know the city or you can choose the underrated move of resting like it’s your job.

That evening we’ll meet up for a welcome dinner to get to know your fellow riders, guides, and support crew and go over what’s ahead.

Day 2: Naadam Festival Opening Ceremony & Bike Preparation

opening ceremony nadaam festival

Today kicks off with the opening ceremony of the Naadam Festival, Mongolia’s biggest cultural celebration. You’ll see the energy, tradition, and uniqueness that make Naadam so special, plus the famous “Three Sports” of wrestling, horse racing, and archery.

After the festivities, we shift into ride mode with a full bike check and setup

Day 3: Ulaanbaatar → Stones of Small Land → Ongi Monastery

- Total Distance  360km with 90% off road and 10% pavement

Today marks the real start of the ride as we leave Ulaanbaatar behind and head straight into Mongolia’s wide-open landscapes. The route quickly shifts from pavement to dirt, opening up into rolling steppe and long off-road stretches that set the tone for the days ahead.

Our first major stop is Stones of Small Land (Baga Gazriin Chuluu)—a striking granite formation rising out of the plains like it doesn’t belong there. Wind-carved rock towers, narrow passages, and tucked-away pockets make it a perfect place to stop, stretch your legs, and explore on foot while getting your first real taste of Mongolia’s rugged geology.

From there, we continue south through remote terrain toward Ongi Monastery, the atmospheric ruins of a once-important Buddhist complex set along the river. As the sun drops and the steppe goes quiet, it’s an unforgettable place to end the day—remote, peaceful, and steeped in history.

Day 4: Ongi Monastery → Khujirt

- Total Distance  420km with 95% off road and 5% pavement

Today is a true immersion into the Mongolian countryside, with a full day of riding through wide-open steppe and remote backcountry routes. Leaving Ongi Monastery behind, we head deeper into rural Mongolia, where dirt tracks stretch to the horizon and the sense of scale really starts to sink in.

The riding today is predominantly off-road, flowing across grasslands, river crossings, and rolling terrain that rewards smooth throttle control and steady momentum. Along the way, we’ll pass nomadic herder camps, grazing animals, and landscapes that feel unchanged for centuries—this is the Mongolia many riders dream about.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Khujirt, a small settlement known for producing some of the best horse milk in Mongolia. It’s the perfect way to end a big ride day—relaxing, unwinding, and swapping stories from the trail as you try a regional specialty you’re not likely to forget.

Day 5: Khujirt → Orkhon Valley & Waterfall → Tsenkher Hot Springs

- Total Distance  260km with 100% off road

Today is a standout riding day as we make our way into the heart of the Orkhon Valley, one of Mongolia’s most important cultural and natural landscapes. The route is fully off-road, crossing open grasslands, rolling hills, and river valleys that feel endless and wild. This is classic Mongolia riding—remote, scenic, and deeply rewarding.

Our main highlight is Orkhon Waterfall (Ulaan Tsutgalan), where the Orkhon River drops over ancient lava rock into a dramatic gorge. We’ll stop to explore the area on foot, take photos, and soak in the scale of the landscape that has supported nomadic life for centuries.

From there, we continue riding toward Tsenkher, where the day ends at the famous Tsenkher Hot Springs. After a long and adventurous day in the saddle, there’s nothing better than easing tired muscles in the naturally heated pools and relaxing under the open Mongolian sky.

Day 6: Tsenkher Hot Springs → Karakorum → Ugii Lake

ancient capital city of mongolian empire karakorum drone day 4

- Total Distance  190km with 70% off road and 30% pavement

After a relaxed morning at Tsenkher, we ride north toward Karakorum (Kharkhorin), once the capital of the Genghis Khan–led Mongol Empire. The route eases up compared to previous days, blending dirt roads and smoother sections as we transition from raw wilderness into one of Mongolia’s most historically significant regions.

We’ll spend time exploring Karakorum, where Genghis Khan established the center of an empire that would eventually stretch across much of Eurasia. Walking among the ruins and nearby monastery brings Mongolia’s history to life—an impressive reminder of how this remote landscape once sat at the heart of a global power.

From there, we continue on to Ugii Lake, a wide and tranquil freshwater lake surrounded by open steppe. The riding is relaxed and scenic, making this a perfect reset day. We arrive with time to unwind, take in the views, and enjoy a calm evening by the water before the adventure continues.

Day 7: Ugii Lake → Elsentasarkhai Sand Dunes

mongolia accomodation day 4 ger and cabins drone

- Total Distance  110km with 100% off road

Today is a shorter mileage day, but it brings a fun shift in riding style as we go 100% off-road on the way to the Elsentasarkhai Sand Dunes. The terrain changes more often, and you’ll get the kind of ADV riding that keeps you engaged—more texture, more variety, and a little more “okay, this is why we came.”

Some sections can be a bit trickier than earlier days, especially as traction changes, but this isn’t a race and it’s not meant to feel intense. We’ll ride at a steady pace, regroup often, and help each other through anything that feels new or awkward. It’s one of those days where you finish feeling more confident than when you started.

Arriving at Elsentasarkhai is the reward—wide open spaces, rolling dunes, and that unreal Mongolia scenery that makes you stop and stare for a second.

Day 8: Elsentasarkhai Sand Dunes → Mongolian Nomadic Camp

- Total Distance  220km with 10% off road and 90% pavement

Today’s ride leaves the dunes behind and heads into greener, rolling countryside on the way to a Mongolian nomadic camp set in a stunning landscape of lush hills and wide-open valleys. The pace is more relaxed, giving you time to soak in the scenery and recharge after the more technical riding days.

The real magic happens on arrival. Tonight you’ll experience your own mini Naadam festival, where the traditions you could only watch at the main Naadam become something you can actually do. You’ll be able to participate in the games and activities, making it a fun, full-circle cultural experience.

The evening also includes a horse show highlighting local riders’ skills, plus traditional Mongolian throat singing—an unforgettable soundtrack to a night in the steppe.

Day 9: Mongolian Nomadic Camp → Terelj National Park

jeff with kazakh eagle hunter in ger mongolia

- Total Distance  110km with 10% off road 90% pavement

Today’s ride brings us back toward the east as we make our way to Terelj National Park, with a mix of scenic riding and meaningful cultural stops along the way. The landscape begins to shift again—rocky formations, forested hills, and wide valleys signal our approach to one of Mongolia’s most iconic national parks.

One of today’s highlights is a visit to a Kazakh eagle owner’s home, where you’ll learn about the deep tradition of eagle hunting and the relationship between hunter and bird. It’s a rare, personal look into a way of life that’s been passed down for generations.

We end the day in Terelj National Park with a truly hands-on experience: preparing a khorkhog, Mongolia’s traditional stone barbecue. Everyone gets involved in the process—handling the hot stones, preparing the meat, and cooking together—before sitting down to enjoy the meal as a group in a spectacular natural setting.

Day 10: Terelj National Park → Ulaanbaatar

bazis resort overlooking the mountains

- Total Distance  60km with 100% pavement

Our final ride day takes us out of Terelj National Park and back toward Ulaanbaatar, easing from the quiet countryside into the energy of the city. It’s a relaxed ride and a chance to reflect on the eight straight days of riding and the experiences that made this adventure so memorable.

Once back in Ulaanbaatar, we wrap up the 11-day tour with a spa-style sauna session—perfect for recovery after time on the bike—followed by our traditional Mongolian Farewell dinner. It’s a relaxed, celebratory way to close out the journey, swap final stories, and bring the adventure full circle.
