The Best Budget ADV Motorcycle Pants Under $200

When we think of adventure gear, a few big players come to mind. You've got Klim, Rev'It!, Dainese, and Alpinestars to name a few, but they share one major issue: none of them actually make a good pair of ADV pants for under $200.

The good news is that there are some solid alternatives if you know where to look. Depending on how you ride, you might need to think outside the box a bit, but we've tested plenty of "adventure-worthy" pants that aren't technically ADV gear at all.    

Below, we'll dig into what you should be looking for if your budget for ADV motorcycle pants is $200 or less. Before we dive into our three favorite picks, however, let's take a second to explain what makes any of these pants worth paying for.

What Makes ADV Motorcycle Pants Worth Buying?

Sure, you could wait on a sale and potentially pick up a pair of Alpinestars Andes or Klim Dakar pants for under $200, but you might be waiting a long time. Our advice? Pay less attention to the brand name, and focus on the details.   

Safety First

"ADV motorcycle pants need to be crash-worthy first and foremost."

Our usual advice here is to look for CE certification on your pants, because CE-rated pants are proven to be both abrasion and impact-resistant. That advice still applies here, but you might have a tough time finding a CE stamp on budget-friendly pants.

The primary reason for this is that ADV pants designed for the American market often skip this certification to save on costs. This doesn't necessarily make them any less safe, although you'll want to pay close attention to the materials and construction. 

Look for heavy-duty reinforcements in the knees and seat, as well as armor in the knees where applicable. Many budget-friendly ADV pants include CE-rated armor even though they don't feature a CE certification, which we always take as a good sign. 

Seasonality and Weather Protection

"Don't limit your selection to waterproof pants. You can always add rain gear later."

One of the perks of shelling out $800 for Klim's Badlands Pro pants is that you're getting a piece of gear that works anywhere, anytime, rain, shine, sun, cold, whatever. If you're shopping on a $200 budget, that likely won't be the case.

In our experience, manufacturers can't effectively engineer a garment that's both protective and widely versatile at this price point. For this reason, you'll be better off buying pants that are either designed specifically for warm or cold weather use.

You'll also want to allow for waterproofing. Some budget ADV motorcycle pants come with a rain liner, while others require standalone rain gear. The latter is dirt cheap, so don't pass up a good pair of pants just because they aren't waterproof. 

Don't Limit Yourself to "ADV-Specific" Options

"When you're riding in the heat, ventilation is paramount."

Last but not least, if you want a good pair of ADV pants on a budget, don't limit yourself to "adventure-specific" gear. So-called ADV gear is some of the most expensive stuff on the market, while touring and off-road gear is some of the cheapest. 

With the right armor set-up and a plan for bad weather, off-road gear is some of the best warm-weather adventure gear on the planet. The same goes for touring gear in the winter, although there are some great summer options in this segment as well.  

The Best Budget ADV Pants We've Tested

Keeping the above points in mind, we've got three pairs of ADV motorcycle pants we've tested this year we'd recommend. These are our sub-$200 picks for every sort of adventure rider on the planet.  

Sedici Avventura Waterproof Pants: Best Overall

You can't beat Comoto's house brand, Sedici, when it comes to value. Their Avventura Waterproof Pants are a prime example of that, and are hands-down our favorite all-around adventure motorcycle pants under $200. 

Bang for the buck is downright absurd at this price, with a spec sheet that includes CE Level 2 knee armor as standard, as well as a removable rain liner. Hell, Sedici even includes a removable thermal liner, making this a true 4-season garment.

All the ADV basics are here, including sizable cargo pockets, stretch panels for mobility, and some decent-sized thigh vents for airflow. These pants look and feel the part, and should you choose to add the matching jacket, you'll have a full kit for under $500.

Our biggest complaint is that the Avventura uses a thinner 450D material, which is sufficient but far from overbuilt. We'll also note that the rain liner looks and feels like budget rain gear, meaning it's not particularly comfortable, breathable, or durable.

Fox Racing Ranger Off Road Pants: Best Summer ADV Pant

In keeping with our "outside the box" approach to adventure motorcycle pants, we'd highly recommend Fox Racing's Ranger pants for warm weather duty, especially if you're doing a lot of dirt miles.

We wore these on a recent enduro ride through Spain while testing the new Stark Varg EX, and they're just what the doctor ordered: take your favorite pair of enduro pants, make them utterly bulletproof, then add extra pockets for convenience.

We use the Ranger for adventure rides because it's built from 850D polyester, which is tougher than the fabric in most budget-friendly ADV pants. They also have plenty of stretch, big zippers for ventilation, and large cargo pockets on either thigh.

Like most enduro pants, the Ranger's main shortcoming is that it doesn't include armor, so you'll need to bring your own padded shorts/knee brace combo for street duty. They also don't include weather protection, so standalone rain gear is the move here.

Tourmaster Caliber WP Pants: Best Cold Weather ADV Pant

What's the difference between a good pair of cold-weather adventure pants and a pair of generic black touring pants? As far as we're concerned, the answer is the cost, and not much else.

Tourmaster's Caliber WP pants are a great example. Heavy-duty materials, reliable waterproofing, level two knee armor, and a removable thermal liner are all here, and the whole package goes for under $170 all day. 

"Rev'it!'s Cavern gloves have had our back in all but the coldest conditions."

Bonus points to Tourmaster for stepping up to 1000D nylon in the knees and seat, which is double the weight of the Cordura found on Klim pants at twice the price. We also dig the relaxed fit, which we use for extra layers when the weather gets bitterly cold. 

The Caliber pants are tough to fault for the money, but we do wish the waterproof liner was removable rather than sewn-in. We'll also note that because there's no adjustable ventilation on offer here, we wouldn't recommend these outside of fall and winter.
